Retaining walls & raised garden beds from Ashbury Landscaping…
For proper drainage, most homebuilders grade the yard to slope away from the house… so, in all likelihood your yard will have a pitch (or slope) to it, too. For many homeowners, that slope can be quite significant… often too steep to safely use a lawnmower, or even walk on when wet.
One of the most effective ways to create flat ground on your sloping property is by terracing it (creating a series of flat areas), using one, or more retaining walls.
A retaining wall is any structure that holds back soil or rock from a building, structure, or area. They prevent downslope movement or erosion and provide support for vertical or near-vertical grade changes.
A retaining wall system lets you make a sloping surface flat… and if the rise you want to deal with is less than 6-7 feet in height, it can often be done with only one wall.
Building a raised garden involves a form of retaining wall.
